Chapter 5- How to Negotiate Your Travel Plans

Traveling can be stressful to say the least; and the price of your next vacation can seem really high if you didn't try to negotiate some of your travel plans. Yes, that is right, you can actually negotiate some of your travel plans to save you some money and still have an enjoyable time.

Airfare

Unfortunately this is one of the hardest aspects of traveling to negotiate upon because the airlines are not really flexible in terms of price or upgrade opportunities. Typically the only time to negotiate something while flying is when the airline has made a mistake, such as over booking a flight, which then you can usually negotiate upgrades such as a first class seat.

To get the best deal for airfares it is better to book your flight either three or more months ahead of the vacation date, or two weeks away from your vacation date. It may seem weird that these are exact opposite times but airlines have lower prices for those who book way in advance and then raise them once the date gets closer. Then, two weeks before the airline will lower the prices again because they have seats to fill.

Hotels

Knowing the base price of hotels within the town you want to stay at is the first step in negotiating your travel plans for hotels. You can look this up at Kayak or other traveling search and look for the days you will be staying. When you contact a hotel, ask for the very lowest rate they have or the walk away price. This price is offered to customers who will walk out based on the price of the hotel alone, so the hotel will offer a lower price than what has previously discussed.

Another way to negotiate some of your travel plans is to check into your hotel late. When you check in late, most of the rooms will be filled and the potential for an upgrade in room for the same price goes up. You will have to ask if they have free upgrades available. Worst case scenario they will say no and might throw some attitude your way, best case scenario is you're relaxing in a king sized bed with a full suite for the price of your standard room.

Car Rental

It is also best to check out the base price for car rentals as well, which you can find on Kayak or other sources to see what they will be charging that day. This gives you a price to negotiate from and work down. If you are planning to travel for the weekend, call that Friday and ask to get your rental set up. Ensure that you have your information, credit card and driver's license so you will just have to walk in and sign some papers. This requires less work and time on both sides, so you may get a better car or deal if you do it this way.

Ask for an upgrade. Depending on what
